Artist's Description

Alli Mariri

An important moment for a shaman's apprentice is when this magical phlegm is received from the maestro seen top right. It can be obtained by chanting the icaro of the punga tree which produces a fatty phlegm-like resin, although there are fish and snails which have it as well. Snakes are great teachers of intelligence and sensitivity and there are certain kinds which transmit the mariri: green, blue, black, white, red and sky blue.

In the picture you see the arcontes giving strength to the mariri. Arcontes are angels whose wings join together when they are working and when they finish they come unstuck again.

The author of Ayahuasca Visions: The Religious Iconography of a Peruvian Shaman...
