Artist's Description
Allpa Manchari - Elementos de la Tierra
Allpa manchari is guardian of the heart of the Earth. He connects us with the Earth which nurtures us. Manchari means feared and respected; Allpa manchari is Lord of the Earth. He has magnificently curved horns which symbolise the elements of the Earth which support life and metabolic processes necessary for growth.
Here the spirits are communing with the spirit of ayahuasca and the ashpa runa (earth people) who serve the allpa manchari. They do not suffer from the intense heat and fire in the heart of the earth because it is their domain. The allpa manchari ingests combustible gases produced by the Earth, drinks petroleum and eats carboniferous substances.

The author of Ayahuasca Visions: The Religious Iconography of a Peruvian Shaman...
