Artist's Description

Amazonica Romantica

This charming picture was one of Pablo's final works, and it heralded an intended return to his earlier genre of painting the plants and landscapes of his beloved Amazon rainforest. The painting depicts a couple hand in hand experiencing the mystic enchantment of the selva illuminated by the full moon.

To the lower left are the large leaves of the cocona plant (Solanum sessiliflorum). Cocona fruit is greatly appreciated in the Amazon for making delicious juices and a sauce essential for eating fish: aji de cocona. Just behind is a Shipibo mahuete from which the ayahuasca liana grows. The feet of the mahuete represent the bond that ayahuasca has with Mother Earth.

The author of Ayahuasca Visions: The Religious Iconography of a Peruvian Shaman...
