Artist's Description

Here is A’tun Mauca Caspi, the Angel of Trees.

In the Quechua language his name means “great ancient tree.” Here he has adopted the form of an ancient renaco tree, which is a living temple and sanctuary in the rich mythology of the Amazon.

The renaco tree has an intricate, extensive trunk, branch, and a labyrinthine root system, and it offers sanctuary—just like a castle—to many types of animals, insects, and birds.

The author of Ayahuasca Visions: The Religious Iconography of a Peruvian Shaman...
