Artist's Description

Rintalá stands as a sentinel at the threshold to the A’tun Angash llakta (“great celestial city”).

On either side of her are two columns carved into a helix of solid green jasper and emerald. Embedded in each column are exquisite gemstones, such as fire rubies, agate, onyx, emerald, turquoise, and sapphire.

The column on the left represents Justice and the right-hand column represents Mercy. Entry is permitted only to those virtuous humans who have dedicated their lives to acts of charity, compassion, love, and kindness to all living beings.

The author of Ayahuasca Visions: The Religious Iconography of a Peruvian Shaman...
