Artist's Description

Sinchi Puca Lupuna

The puca lupuna (Cavanillesia umbellata) is the most formidable tree that a palero apprentice can work with. After a lengthy journey beset with trials, he reaches the splendid palaces and temples above made from precious stones and crystals. He must be well prepared for the strict diet required by this palo which will test his resilience and character. If he fails he could lose his sanity, or even face death.

The Mother of this tree does not distinguish between good and evil, thus both curanderos and hechiceros can learn to heal or to harm. A sorcerer learns to murder without any qualm, and can kill his own father or son without feeling shame. A curandero on the other hand, can learn to heal this kind of sorcery. On the right edge of the picture is the Mother of the puca lupuna which is the great temple of alquimia palistica.

The author of Ayahuasca Visions: The Religious Iconography of a Peruvian Shaman...
