Artist's Description

Supai Pucabufeo (The Magical Pink Dolphin) This is the legendary pucabufeo or Amazonian dolphin which transforms itself into an attractive young man and seduces pretty young women with his charm. In the River Ucayali region these beings often make their appearance in the port offering fish, which is what the girls like. After a brief courtship, the girl agrees to live with the pucabufeo but he is never there when other people are around, so he avoids being found out. In the days of the rubber boom, rubber tappers would frequently be away for long periods. That was the ideal time to take advantage of innocent girls, and infants would be born half pink.

The author of Ayahuasca Visions: The Religious Iconography of a Peruvian Shaman...
